  • Lighting Intensive

  • Enhance buildings’ best qualities through illumination. In this week-long immersion program taught by MFA Lighting Design faculty, students work with leading designers to develop lighting plans and luminaires that make architectural volume and space more legible — and memorable.

Parsons Intensive Lighting Design Studio is a week-long immersion experience in lighting design. Targeted to practicing professionals, it offers the opportunity to expand knowledge and capabilities in lighting design and serve to refresh and reinvigorate skills and gain experience with cutting-edge techniques in lighting design practice. Taking advantage of the expertise in the MFA Lighting Design program in the School of Constructed Environments at Parsons The New School for Design, participants spend a full seven days in a virtual studio environment working on a design project sited in New York City. The program includes virtual hands-on exercises to demonstrate the role light can play in architectural environments, and design techniques to achieve excellence in lighting design.

Typically offered after the Parsons Summer Intensive Lighting Design Studio, but now offered in the summer of 2021, the Parsons Summer Intensive Daylighting Design Studio can be taken as a stand-alone course, a follow-up to the Parsons Summer Intensive Lighting Design Studio, or a package with the lighting design intensive (two weeks). The daylighting intensive will extend the analysis of the design project sited in New York to exploring daylight availability, fenestration opportunities, and the overall quality of daylighting through physical modeling and the use of the light lab’s heliodon and diffuse sky simulator; analytical techniques will also be discussed. Taught by the full-time faculty in the MFA Lighting Design program, the intensive emphasizes the quality of daylight and its interaction with electric light and lighting controls.
