Merit Scholarships 

Upon admission to The New School you may be offered a scholarship through your academic department. Such scholarships are not offered through the Office of Financial Aid.

FAFSA and Student Aid Index  

The U.S. Department of Education uses the income and asset information entered on a student’s FAFSA to calculate an Student Aid Index (SAI). The SAI helps The New School determine the amount and types of financial aid a student qualifies for. You can view your SAI and your submitted FAFSA at studentaid.gov.

Award Notification

View the types and amounts of your financial aid in your MyNewSchool portal. Graduate students are eligible to borrow federal direct unsubsidized and Graduate PLUS loans. Student loans are placed in the offered status. If you wish to borrow, please accept your loans.

Outstanding Requirements

In your MyNewSchool portal, find out about any outstanding requirements that you have. If you borrow loans, you must complete a Master Promissory Note and Loan Entrance Counseling at studentaid.gov.

Cost of Attendance and Budget 

Use the estimated cost of attendance to create a budget for yourself. Include all of your resources: job income, parental support, financial aid, scholarships, and gifts. Determine how much you will need to contribute toward your education for the first year.

Assistantships are paid as compensation for teaching, laboratory work, or other services provided to an academic or administrative department.

If you are seeking an assistantship, notify your academic department. Note: Students who accept an assistantship are required to provide written notification to the Office of Financial Aid when they receive their appointment.

Many private sources of financial aid are available for qualified students. Visit the External Scholarships website for links that will help you research external funding sources.

Note: Students are required to provide notification of external financial aid to the Office of Financial Aid.

International graduate students studying on an F-1 or J-1 student visa are eligible for merit-based aid consideration as part of the admission process. For more information, see the International Students section.
