  • Financial Aid Facts

    • We encourage all U.S. citizens and eligible non-citizens to apply for federal student aid using the FAFSA®. To view eligibility requirements, click here.
    • The New School code is 002780. 
    • Apply early; the FAFSA® opens on October 1 for the following academic year. 
    • Merit scholarships are awarded through the Office of Admission.
    • Federal aid, including grants, loans, and work study, are determined by the financial information of the student's family as entered on the FAFSA®.
    • Residents of the State of New York must apply for state aid on the hesc.ny.gov website.
    • Students can access all of their financial aid information through their MyNewSchool portal. 

    Understanding Your Cost of Attendance

    • The Cost of Attendance is not a bill. It is an estimate of the total costs incurred by a typical student who attends during the fall and spring semesters while living in New York City.
    • Tuition: The direct cost of taking classes. Tuition is billed by the Office of Student Accounts.
    • Fees: Costs associated with enrolling at The New School. General fees are charged to all students; specific fees are associated with particular majors.
    • Loan Fees: If you accept a Federal Direct Subsidized or Unsubsidized Loan, your Cost of Attendance will include your loan origination fees. You can read more about federal loan fees here.
    • Living Expenses (Housing and Food): This figure is the cost of living, including food, for an on- or off-campus student. On-campus housing and meal plans are billed by The New School's Office of Student Accounts; off-campus housing and food are not. Click here for more housing and food information.
    • Books and Supplies: The average cost of purchasing or leasing books and supplies through any vendor of choice.
    • Transportation: The average cost of traveling to and from campus within the greater metropolitan area of New York City.
    • Miscellaneous Personal Expenses: The average cost of purchasing other necessities such as hygiene items and entertainment.
    • Professional Licensure Fees: The average cost of obtaining a professional license for either an MA in Architecture or a PhD in Clinical Psychology.

    All expenses outlined in the table below are applicable to students enrolled for one academic year (fall and spring).
