    Sitting on the Unsettling

Sitting on the Unsettling is a handmade crochet sculpture collection. It represents an era of polarization, in which people are divided by global political tensions. Through this project, I aim to capture the process of transcending division and turning it into acceptance.

My fiber sculpture series was inspired by a topic that has been weighing on my mind: the ongoing dispute between my country, Taiwan, and China. Statements made by the two governments are steering us toward ever-greater conflict and even the possibility of war.

This conflict is not unique; it reflects a larger issue we see worldwide. Extreme ideological divisions can lead to a willingness to sacrifice peace for the sake of one's beliefs. I can't help but imagine the devastating consequences it might have for my country.

Against this somber backdrop a glimmer of hope emerges from the words of the Sufi philosopher Rumi: “Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing, there is a field. I’ll meet you there.” Through my art, I aim to express this longing for reconciliation, embracing the complexity of human experience and understanding. I chose the medium of crocheting because it symbolizes interweaving and connection.

Lacking a solution, I as an artist would like to grieve through crochet. I grieve the wars happening right now. I grieve for the loss of peace and the freedom to speak we once had. I create unique shape sculptures to grieve unique beings. I express the idea that struggle doesn’t diminish people but rather serves as a means of showing resilience and of growing and healing. I affirm the power of coexistence and strive to bridge the gaps that separate people. Just grieve. It’s beautiful on the other side.
