Profile

Tom has taught computer graphics applications at the New School/Parsons for over twenty-five years.

Across a wide-ranging work career, Tom has been a teacher/trainer, published author and designer/illustrator. In early years, he worked in public health as a program evaluator, researcher and Unit Director. Then, for many more years he mobilized his graphic and technical skills to design and develop a broad array of public health educational and promotional materials for the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. These materials, guided by the communication needs of the Department and his bureau, were widely distributed and displayed across the city. They helped to inform New Yorkers about key health issues and the resources available to them. Perhaps most widely seen were his reproductive health and prenatal care subway posters, which were mounted throughout the NYC subway system.

Over the years, Tom has developed a teaching style that combines learning, problem-solving, hands-on exploration and having fun. Aside from the New School/Parsons, Tom has also taught classes at NYU's School of Professional Studies (SPS), beta-tested for Adobe, and was for several years a senior trainer at United Digital Artists (UDA).

Tom’s academic background includes an MPA (from Princeton) and a BA (from Yale). He remains active in alumni activities at both institutions. Tom learned his computer graphic skills from coursework at SVA and the New School, and from his many years of on-the-job learning, teaching and training.

Publications/other:
I wrote and published several articles on NYC public health issues/services during my many years working with the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH). Also during these years I helped develop and design a wide range of health educational and promotional materials used by the Department, including pamphlets, fact sheets, research reports, subway posters, memorabilia, instructional modules, web materials, and program and project logos. These materials, which were distributed through many venues, helped raise public awareness of health issues, campaigns, outreach events and encouraged New Yorkers to utilize public and community services/resources available to them. My subway posters, for example, appeared throughout NYC's subway system, thus raising visibility for DOHMH's health messages and services.
