    Rosemary O'Neill

    Profile

    Rosemary O'Neill is a specialist in Twentieth Century Art History in Europe and the Americas. She is the author of Art and Visual Culture of the French Riviera, 1956-1971 (Ashgate, 2012) and co-editor and contributor to Art as Adventure: Going Beyond (Cambridge Scholars Press, 2018).  She has contributed chapters to several edited volumes including: "Agnes Varda's Du Cote de la Cote: Place as Sociological Phenomenon," France and the Visual Arts since 1945 (Bloomsbury 2019); "La Cedille qui Sourit: Aesthetic Research under the sign of humor," Parody and Festivity in Early Modern Art: Essays on Comedy as Social Vision (Ashgate, 2012);  "Ecole de Nice: Action Artistique et Bonne Humour," Ecole de Nice: Paroles d'Artistes (Paris, 2010); "Le 'naturalisme integral' de Pierre Restany: la perception disciplinee et la dematerialization de l'objet," Le Demi-Siecle de Pierre Restany (Paris: INHA, 2009). She contributed journal articles and essays to exhibition publications including:  "A Propos de Nice: de-centering the avant-garde, 1947-1977," A Propos de Nice,(Nice: MAMAC, 2017), reprinted in Hong Kong, 2018;  "Ete 70: The Plein-air exhibitions of Supports-Sufaces," (Journal of Curatorial Studies (2013); "Christoph Fink's 'Atlas of Movements': between cartography and poetry" Switch (on paper) 2018; "Modernist Rendezvous: Amadeo de Souza Cardoso and the Delaunays," At the Edge: A Portuguese Futurist Amadeo de Souza Cardoso (Washington, DC and Lisbon, 1999-2000); and Art in Latin America, The Modern Era, 1820-1980 (Yale University Press and The Southbank Center, London, 1989,1994, 2006). O'Neill has been an invited lecturer at the University of Johannesburg (2016), and INHA Paris, (2006), and she has presented research at the Universities Art Association of Canada (2019); College Art Association (2019, 2017, 2016); Pisa-Florence Symposium on Culture and Tourism (2015); Festival de l'Histoire de l'Art, Fontainebleau (2013); SECAC (2012). O'Neill co-organized and moderated Unruly Design: Making, Changing and Breaking the Rules, Parsons/Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum (2018), co-organizer and presenter for the colloquium Centre Pompidou at 40, EPCAF and Parsons Paris (2017); and presenter at L'Art contemporain et la Cote d'Azur, un territoire pour l'experimentation, 1951-2011, Nice, FR. O'Neill has chaired several panels including recently CAA (2016, 2015), and in addition to her book reviews and exhibitions reviews, she has served as a advisor and juror for the CAA-Getty International Travel Grant (2014-2017); APEX, NY contemporary art exhibitions (2019); nominee jury for the Vera List Center Prize for Art and Politics and The New School University Writing Awards (2015-2017).  Her curatorial work includes: Four Walls, a John Cage/Merce Cunningham performed by Sin-Cha Hong, New School University (2004), Paris 1968: Posters from the Atelier Populaire, exhibition catalogue (NY: New School University, 1998) and Agit-Pop: 68/98 in Perspective, co-curator, in conjunction with Anthology Film Archives. O'Neill served as Chair of the CAA International Committee (2014-2017); CAA Conference Committee (2017-2020) and CAA Services to Historians of Visual Arts Committee (2020-2023). She is a member of the International Association of Art Critics, Arttable, European Postwar and Contemporary Art Forum (EPCAF), a CAA Affiliated Society, and Universites Art Association of Canada.
