Profile

Bio

David Thonis is an artist and educator working between New York City and Neversink, New York. His practice incorporates installation, video and performance in its questioning of the built environment and the systems that support it. He has an undergraduate degree from The Rhode Island School of Design in Furniture, several years of study in Industrial Design at The School of Visual Arts and a Masters of Studio Art from Hunter College, The City University of New York. 

Studio Approach 

Design Studio 3 will be a combination of studio and survey, in which we examine all ends of the spectrum between art and design - there will be weekly presentations of artists who address the built environment, as well as designers who aim to ask questions rather than answer. These boundaries can be hard to locate, so much of the course will aim to define the context in which each of us hopes to be making. 

At times, the curriculum of Studio 3 will look like a "graduate" level seminar, in which there will be a greater focus on reading and discussion, research, theory and critique. Projects are intended to be short (2-3 weeks) in duration, exploring everything from speculative to systems design, site specific installation, cultural critique, humor as satirial tool, new media, video, AI, performance and much more.
