Profile
Carly Cannell is an interdisciplinary designer and educator, a licensed, NCIDQ-certified interior designer with more than twenty-five years of practice across commercial, healthcare, residential, hospitality, and cultural environments. She is Assistant Professor and Director of the BFA Interior Design program at Parsons School of Design, where her scholarship examines how acoustic ecologies and sensory environments shape perception, memory, and behavior. In 2007, she founded WEETU, an interdisciplinary design and research studio working across spatial design, sound, branding, and strategy. Through the research-driven exhibition When Places Speak – New York, she developed sound as a methodology for investigating sites of sex trafficking across all five boroughs, capturing the atmospheric weight of place through field recordings that register human presence without implicating individuals.
Cannell created the Parsons electives Immersive Soundscapes, which explores sound as a primary design element, and Impact Exhibit, a design-build course in which she led the inaugural cohort from concept through fabrication to exhibit at SaloneSatellite during Salone del Mobile and NYCxDESIGN in spring 2026. She serves on the governing board of the Parsons Neuro-AI Design Lab and co-leads The Production Studio, the first studio to unite students across Parsons, Mannes, Jazz, and Drama around a single live production built against real client briefs, leading its scenic design team. Through immersive installations, design-build experimentation, and public scholarship, Cannell positions spatial experience as a medium for care, agency, and social transformation, an ethic that also shapes how she leads the BFA Interior Design program.
