  • The School of Art and Design History and Theory (ADHT) engages students at all degree levels in the analysis of art and design as essential to the formation of knowledge and culture. All Parsons bachelor’s students take ADHT’s first-year undergraduate curriculum, developing their critical thinking and writing skills. ADHT also offers the BFA Design History and Practice program; the MA Fashion Studies and the MA History of Design and Curatorial Studies graduate programs; and electives and courses available to students throughout The New School.

    Core classes build close-knit intellectual program communities, while electives, student-run journals, and conferences generate interdisciplinary discourse on art, architecture, design, and fashion theory and practice.

    Supporting your work are New York City’s prestigious cultural institutions, collections, and curatorial platforms — including our partner Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, whose holdings and staff you can access.

    Integrating Theory and Practice

    Seminars and lectures in criticism and writing guide your engagement with visual and material culture. Critical to studio work, these courses help you understand art and design over time and in various geographical settings.

    Dynamic Careers

    You prepare for the growing array of global careers in media, criticism, curatorial and archival work emerging from the rise of visual culture and curatorial platforms. You also graduate well positioned to pursue advanced studies.
