  • Curriculum Notice: Faculty in Sociology are engaging in a comprehensive redesign of this curriculum. Students who began their studies at Lang before the fall 2026 semester can continue in or add this major. Students who begin their studies at Lang in fall 2026 or after will still be able to take courses in this subject area and can pursue it through minors, electives, or broader Liberal Arts study. Students in the Bachelor's Program for Adults and Transfer Students (Adult Bachelor’s Program) who are interested in this subject should consult their core faculty advisor.

    Requirements for the BA in Sociology for Students Who Began Their Studies at Lang Before the Fall 2026 Semester

    Only specific courses satisfy the major requirements, including electives. Courses should be chosen carefully, in consultation with the departmental faculty advisor and your Student Success advisor. Learn more and track your progress in the Detailed Degree Requirements and Sociology Requirements Worksheets below.

    Students in the Adult Bachelor's Program who are interested in studying sociology should consult their core faculty advisor.

    Introductory courses:

    • LSOC 2001 Sociological Imagination (3–4 credits)
    • 1 LSOC Approved Classical Sociological Theory course* (3–4 credits)
    • 1 LSOC Contemporary Theory course* (3–4 credits)

    Other required courses:

    • 1 LSOC Sociological Methods course (3–4 credits)
    • 3 LSOC Electives, 2000 to 3000 level (9–12 credits)
    • 4 LSOC electives, 3000 level or higher* (12–16 credits)

    Senior Capstone:

    • Choose 1 of the following in consultation with your departmental faculty advisor (3–4 credits):
      • GSOC 5xxx graduate-level Sociology course
      • LSOC 4990 Independent Thesis

    Total Credits: 36-48

    *BA/MA students should take GSOC courses. All students should select graduate-level courses in consultation with the departmental faculty advisor.
