Requirements for the Arts in Context Concentration (BA, The Arts)

This concentration places responsibility upon students to articulate their own academic interests and goals. Before declaring this concentration, interested students should meet with the departmental faculty advisors of both Arts in Context and the Arts discipline they would like to study. Declared students should choose their courses in consultation with these departmental faculty advisors and your Student Success advisor. Learn more and track your progress in the Detailed Degree Requirements and Arts Requirements Worksheets below.

    Introductory courses:

    • Choose one (3-4 cr.):
       - ULEC 2320 Aesthetics
       - or LINA 2002 Aesthetics Across the Arts
       - or another approved aesthetics course

    Other required courses:

    • 15-20 credits in one of the Arts disciplines* (Contemporary Music, Contemporary Dance, Theater, or Visual Studies), including one course with a historical focus. Students should follow the minor requirements for that Arts discipline or an alternative course plan approved by the departmental faculty advisor for that area of study.
    • 5 courses in a Liberal Arts area of study (15-20 cr.)
    • 1 additional LINA (Lang Interarts) course (one 4-credit or two 2-credit courses)

    Senior Capstone:

    • Senior Capstone: either one of the Arts senior seminars or an approved individual or collaborative independent project (4 cr.)

*Arts discipline courses must follow the minor requirements for that discipline or an alternate course of study approved by the departmental faculty advisor for the chosen Arts area of study; at least one course must have a historical focus.
