• Employment on Campus

    • Any on-campus employment, including research assistantships, teaching assistantships, and teaching fellowships, must be authorized for J-1 students.
    • Submit your documentation in iGlobal for J-1 on-campus employment.
    • Your request will be reviewed and processed by an ISSS advisor.
    • After you are approved, you will receive an email with instructions for downloading your new DS-2019 with work authorization from iGlobal.
    • You will also be provided with information in the email on how to set up an in-person pickup or mail shipment of your ISSS letter of employment authorization.
    • You must be authorized to work on campus before beginning work.
    • On-campus employment authorizations are valid only for up to 12 months and are job specific. If your job changes or ends or you take another position, you must apply for additional on-campus employment authorization.

    Employment off Campus

    • Off-campus employment for J-1 students is called academic training. Academic training is related to students' field of study.
    • Review the academic training eligibility document.
    • If eligible, enter iGlobal to submit an Academic Training Request.
    • Once you submit the documentation in iGlobal, an ISSS advisor will review your information and process.
    • After you are approved, you will receive an email with instructions for downloading your new DS-2019 with work authorization from iGlobal.
    • You will also be provided information in the email on how to set up an in-person pickup or mail shipment of your ISSS letter of employment authorization.
    • You must be authorized to work off campus before beginning work.
    • Academic training is not open-ended work authorization; it is job specific. If your job changes or ends or you take another position, you must apply for additional academic training authorization.
    • After completing academic training, you must fill out a self-evaluation. The self-evaluation form is on the last page of the academic training handout.
