Global Opportunities

Many students return from their study abroad experience with a desire to support others who are pursuing similar opportunities. If this is you, perhaps you’d consider pursuing a career in international education to support incoming international students and outgoing domestic students. Below are some activities to explore to learn about this field and determine if it is the right fit for you:

• Volunteer as a Global Peer Ambassador.
• Review research on student mobility around the world.
• Visit NAFSA: Association of International Educators to learn more about the field of international education and to participate in their training programs and conferences.
• Visit the Forum on Education Abroad to learn about the best practices in study abroad.
• Follow professional international education organizations in New York, such as One To World.
• Pursue graduate work that will prepare you for a job in international education.

Teaching English abroad is another career path that many returning study abroad students are interested in pursuing. In general, a bachelor's degree is required, although in most cases you do not need to be an English or education major. Organizations are generally more interested in your ability to speak native and fluent English. Below are a few ongoing programs you may want to explore.

The programs listed above are provided for informational purposes only. There are many opportunities to teach English abroad through established programs around the world, but be sure to do your research. You should contact the programs you are interested in directly to request further information. If you need help deciding which program is right for you, the Study Abroad office is happy to review options with you.

Students and alumni interested in teaching English abroad or within the United States are also encouraged to consider pursuing The New School’s Certificate in TESOL program or taking coursework in the program to support their academic and professional endeavors.

GoinGlobal is accessible to all students via MyNewSchool under the Services tab. Primarily a global job board, this platform also includes country and city guides that students can access to learn more about professional resources, industry trends, networking groups, work permit regulations, and financial considerations in their study destination and to receive tips and cultural advice. GoinGlobal offers all New School students:

• In-depth career guides packed with information on hiring trends, work permits/visa regulations, professional and social networking, interview advice, and more

Career Services also offers extensive career resources for New School students and alumni, including employment guides, job listings, and support with registering for internships both in the United States and internationally.

The New School Study Abroad Office supports students applying to international education grant and fellowship programs both while they are New School students and after they graduate. Students returning from study abroad are encouraged to consider these opportunities to plan and support their next international education endeavors. All New School students also have free and unlimited access to COS Pivot, one of the largest databases of public and private grants and fellowship awards. COS Pivot can be used both on and off campus to search for funding by discipline, amount, deadline, purpose of grant, and other criteria.
