    Kristin Reynolds

    Profile

    Kristin Reynolds a food systems researcher and educator based in New York City. She teaches courses on urban food systems and environmental policy as a part -time faculty member in the Environmental Studies and Food Studies programs at The New School.

    Reynolds’ research centers on social justice dynamics in the global food system with a focus on urban agriculture and small-scale/peasant farming. Her first book Beyond the Kale: Urban Agriculture and Social Justice Activism in New York City  (2016; University of Georgia Press’ Geographies of Justice and Social Transformation series; coauthored with N. Cohen) examines the work of farmers and gardeners using urban food production to dismantle oppression in food and environmental systems.


    Reynolds regularly works with community-based non-profit organizations and family farms through her research and teaching. These include: Farm School NYCLa Finca del Sur in the South Bronx; EcoStation:NY, BK Farmyards, and Hattie Carthan Community Garden in Brooklyn; Harlem Grown in Manhattan; and Soul Fire Farm in upstate New York, where she serves on the board of directors of the Soul Fire Farm Institute. She also consults on food systems curriculum development and program evaluation and is a lecturer at Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies.

    Reynolds has a Ph.D. in Geography and M.S. in International Agricultural Development from the University of California, Davis, and bachelor’s degrees in International Soil and Crop Sciences and French Language and Literature from Colorado State University.
