Tony Whitfield has been a member of the faculty of Parsons since 1993. He is an Associate Professor and after 2 years as the Director of the Product Design department's Furniture Program, became department Chair in 1999. In this position, he has restructured the department's curriculum, establishing a leadership role for Parsons to address social issues. He has been a visiting instructor at the Design School of Universidad Diego Portales in Santiago, Chile and a frequent visiting faculty member at La Escuela de Diseno at Altos de Chavon in the Dominican Republic. From 1990 through 1995 he was the Senior Policy Analyst for Cultural Affairs for the Office of the Manhattan Borough President. He has also served as the Associate Director of Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, Program Director of Just Above Midtown, Inc., Director of Printed Matter, Inc. and the Managing Director of the Soho Center for Visual Artists.Since the mid 70's, he has pursued issues of social justice and cultural enfranchisement combining his work as artist, designer, arts administrator, educator and writer. His photographs have been exhibited in one-person exhibitions at the Instituto Cultural Peruano Norteamericano in Lima, Peru and at the Amy E Tarrant Gallery at the Flynn Center in Burlington Vermont and in group exhibitions at Leslie Lohman Gallery. Other works have been shown at the New York International Contemporary Furniture Fair, SaloneSatellite of the Salone del Mobile in Milan, Abitare Il Tempo in Verona, the Mary Delahoyd Gallery, Rotunda Gallery and Dieu Donne Papermill.
