Funding & Scholarships

Students who receive financial aid toward their program of study at The New School should be aware that not all financial aid awards can be applied to study abroad experiences during the fall and spring semesters. Some awards can only be used for on-campus study at your home institution. 

Tuition and Fees
Students will receive a bill from The New School for participation in an exchange or internal program. Students who are participating in an external program will receive a bill from the host school or program provider for tuition and program fees and a bill from The New School for the mandatory University Services and Student Senate Fees for all students, as well as other fees such as the International Student Fee and Health Fee, for those enrolled in the university's Student Health Insurance Plan. Please note that you may have additional costs not covered by tuition, such as housing, travel, registration, and visa applications. Paying Tuition to Another School
If a student is paying tuition to another school or a third-party program provider, they need to get a consortium or contractual agreement if they plan to use federal financial aid to cover their study abroad. This consortium or contractual agreement must be on file before federal aid can be awarded to the student. Students must contact the Financial Aid office once they have been admitted to their program in order to file this agreement.

Tuition and Financial Aid Eligibility
Most forms of financial aid may be available to use if a student is paying tuition to The New School but may not be available if tuition is being paid to another school. Please see the Financial Aid for Study Abroad Programs Eligibility Chart for more information.

Housing
Housing fees during the study abroad program are the responsibility of the student. In all exchange and external study abroad programs as well as Parsons Paris, students will receive a study abroad program housing bill directly from the program or housing provider and are individually responsible for timely paying any and all housing fees to the program or housing provider.

Additional/Miscellaneous Costs
Students should prepare to budget for any non-tuition costs and fees (such as housing expenses) connected to their study abroad program. For assistance in determining the anticipated costs of your study abroad program, review the program listing information in GoAbroad, use the Study Abroad Budget Worksheet, or contact your study abroad advisor.

Financial Aid Disbursement
Financial aid is disbursed on or after the first day of classes at The New School. This date may differ from the start date/billing date of the study abroad program.

Summer and winter study abroad programs, which do not run in the fall or spring semesters, include the following conditions for financial aid:

• Financial aid is limited.
• TAP is generally not available in summer.
• Student loans and Pell Grants are typically used completely during the fall and spring semesters so they may not be available.
• Private scholarships and loans may be applied.
• PLUS loans may be available, depending on your cost of attendance and credit eligibility.
• Institutional aid, if applicable, may be available if a student meets enrollment eligibility for program or credits.

Winter Session Registration
Winter session programs are typically registered as spring semester courses if they are internal programs. During winter sessions, financial aid may not be disbursed until on or after the first day of spring classes at The New School.

Tuition Charges

The New School does not use the tuition funds the student paid to The New School to pay for any non-tuition and additional required fees.

Summer Term at Parsons Paris
Study during the summer term at Parsons Paris is operated by a third-party provider, Academic Programs International (API), in affiliation with The New School. Students will receive a bill from API and will submit payment to them.

Students should prepare to budget for any non-tuition costs and fees (such as housing expenses) connected to their study abroad program. Housing fees during study abroad are the student’s responsibility, and the study abroad program will issue a bill for housing. For assistance in determining the anticipated costs of your study abroad program, review the program listing information in GoAbroad, use the Study Abroad Budget Worksheet, or contact your study abroad advisor.

Financial Aid Disbursement

International excursions are offered year-round to supplement students’ coursework, research, and extracurricular activities. These excursions generally are short-term experiences, from a few days to a few weeks, and may occur throughout the year. Financial aid is generally not available, since excursions are not a required, integral part of students' program of study.
