    Shireen Hassim

    Profile

    Shireen Hassim is the Spring 2025 Hans Speier Lecturer in the Sociology department at The New School for Social Research.

    Shireen is a scholar of feminism, anticolonial movements, and anti- and de-colonial political theory in Africa. She is particularly interested in the intersectional inequalities of class, gender, race, and sexualities. She writes on social movements and collective action and has published widely in this area, including an award-winning book on South African women’s movements.

    Shireen is the Canada150 Research Chair in Gender and African Politics at Carleton University, where she teaches courses on theories of race and African feminisms, and conducts the PhD comprehensive course in African Studies. She is affiliated with the WISER Institute of Social and Economic Affairs at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa, and she has also taught in NSSR's Democracy and Diversity Summer Institute, run by the Transregional Center for Democratic Studies.
