    Profile

Jessica Engelbrecht is a Postdoctoral Fellow in Psychology at The New School for Social Research. Her research primarily explores the cultural and evolutionary influences that lead to group differences in social cognition and behavior. Her ongoing research explores how gossip about moral transgressions (a common feature of day-to-day conversation) serves different functions among Americans and Japanese; moral gossip can serve to warn listeners about possible bad actors, but can also spur the social group to take regulatory action to correct the offending behavior. Jessica is also conducting research on how gender and sexuality shape person perception and mate value in the context of changing societal norms.
