Inga Blom is Assistant Professsor of Psychology at The New School for Social Research and Interim Director of the Safran Center for Psychological Services.
Her career thus far has bridged community mental health, hospital and academic settings, working to understand and support psychological growth and adjustment with at-risk, high-risk individuals and families, as well as those affected by extreme psychological states and circumstances. Additionally Dr. Blom has focussed on building psychology training programs in interdisciplinary hospital-based inpatient and outpatient settings, elevating the role of clinical psychology and doctoral-level clinicians-in-training across medical disciplines and services. Likewise, she has focused on collaborative efforts to integrate research into clinical practice in ways that address the needs of people seeking care.
Approaching her clinical work from an integrative developmental lens, she is interested in how personal, family and cultural history interact to influence present-day experiences, especially during periods of transition; she is interested in the ways in which developmental moments offer opportunities for growth and self-understanding. From a foundation in psychoanalytic theory and technique, specifically ego psychological, relational and object-relations traditions, Dr. Blom incorporates attachment theory, trauma theory, somatic approaches and communications research into teaching and clinical work. Current areas of focus also include reproductive mental health and parental identity development, specifically perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs) and the use of 3rd party assisted reproductive technology (ART) in family building. Dr. Blom's professional life has also bridged direct clinical work with training clinicians from a scientist-practitioner perspective that recognizes the role of socio-political and systemic forces in care access and quality.
