• A citizen of a foreign country who seeks to enter the United States generally must first obtain a U.S. visa, which is placed in the traveler's passport. The visa is a required travel document for entry in the U.S. but not to be confused with the traveler's status.

All international students and exchange visitors at The New School are advised to hold a valid F or J class visa when entering the U.S. and coming to The New School. Students on Post-Completion Optional Practical Training (OPT) or Post-Completion Academic Training (AT) must have a valid F or J visa for entry as well. This will permit the international student or exchange visitor to enter in the appropriate F or J status for their academic activities at The New School.

A visa can only be obtained at U.S. Embassy or Consulate outside the U.S. Once the traveler has entered the U.S., the traveler may remain in the U.S. for the duration of status even if the visa is expired but will need to renew the expired visa to re-enter the U.S. if traveling abroad.

Certain international travelers may be eligible to travel into the United States without a visa or with an expired visa if they meet the requirements for visa exceptions detailed below.

For additional information, news, and updates about U.S. visas, please visit the U.S. Department of State visa website, review the Visa FAQ, and see Travel FAQ.
