Research and Projects

The Studley Graduate Programs in International Affairs offer abundant opportunities for innovative critical, heterodox research. Following in the footsteps of John Dewey, our programs are committed to combining socially engaged practice with cutting-edge scholarship on pressing contemporary issues. Our focus on research is inspired by the understanding that finding solutions to pressing contemporary problems requires grounded research and critical analysis and an openness to new interdisciplinary approaches. International Affairs builds on the tradition of social research at The New School and its focus on critical and engaged scholarship in the social sciences and humanities. 

Faculty at International Affairs are trained in a range of disciplines, including anthropology, architecture, economics, international relations, political science, sociology, and science and technology studies. Many work in an interdisciplinary manner and draw on a range of methodologies and analytic approaches. Our programs also engage in creative exchange and collaboration with the wider New School community, including The New School for Social Research, Parsons School of Design, and various research centers around the university, such as the India China Institute, the Vera List Center for Art and Politics, and the Zolberg Institute on Migration and Mobility. 

International Affairs promotes and fosters high-quality student research at the MA and PhD levels. Many students carry out independent or project-based and collaborative research in the course of their study. Many also carry out primary research in the field in the International Field Program.
