The certificate prepares students to teach English in private language schools, community colleges, universities, adult education language programs, and private businesses. Individuals from all walks of life in the United States and around the world also hire trained personal tutors to help them learn English.

Many institutions in the New York City area that normally require that candidates hold master's degrees will hire our certificate holders. One administrator told us recently, "If I get a job application from someone with a New School certificate, I always interview that applicant."

When applying abroad, our students report that prospective employers are always impressed that our program includes a minimum of 50 hours of student-teaching time — that's three to four times more than many certificate programs.

The program maintains an extensive list of contacts and hosts private networking events for MATESOL and CTE students as well as public events in which students and alumni have the opportunity to meet prospective employers.

No. The Certificate in TESOL curriculum focuses on teaching English to adults. This program has no connection with New York State Department of Education K–12 certification.

Students can earn the certificate in as little as two academic terms (one school year), but most students take three or four (one and a half to two years). Completion within two years is recommended. Courses are offered and new students are admitted in the fall, spring, and summer terms.
