Transition from Mural to Miro

As you may remember, in 2019, the university invested in a digital whiteboarding tool to enrich teaching pedagogy and learning in virtual environments. At the time, Mural as a platform provided many benefits — such as better cost, a simpler onboarding infrastructure, and more comprehensive faculty and student support. Due to recent changes — significantly Mural’s decision to end their Mural for Education initiative — the timing is right for our institution to transition to Miro.

Miro's versatility, real-time collaboration capabilities, customizable templates, ease of use, supportive community, and extensive integrations make it an ideal technology partner for The New School. We believe this transition will enable faculty members and students to collaborate more efficiently, visualize projects and ideas better, and drive creativity and innovation in teaching and research.

No. If you identify the boards and complete any necessary user actions, you can move your Mural boards directly into Miro. As part of our agreement with Miro, they have committed to the guided import of all Mural boards that have been used in the past 90 days. There may also be an opportunity for you to identify older boards that you wish to transfer through self-service migration. Please note that after October 31, 2024, all New School users will lose access to their university-affiliated Mural accounts. For continuity of access and support, you are encouraged to transfer any active boards into Miro before this date or risk losing the boards altogether. You may also consult Mural resources on the possibility of maintaining a free account and transferring ownership of your New School boards. More information on the guided transition, including a Google Form to identify Mural boards, will be coming soon.

Yes! As part of the Miro onboarding process, the university will receive support in automated (Miro does the work for you) and self-service migration of recently used boards from Mural into Miro. As soon as you register your New School account with Miro, you will be able to engage in self-service migration and begin downloading your Mural boards into Miro on your own. This helpful guide explains how.

We are hopeful users will be able to begin using Miro by Summer 2024. Getting a jump start in Miro will allow current Mural users to begin integrating the program into their current courses and even transfer Mural boards on their own through Miro’s self-service migration option.

Even if you have not been using Mural, you have the same opportunity to learn about the impressive tools that Miro provides. From real-time brainstorming boards to presentation templates, there are dozens of applications in Miro that can enhance and simplify your teaching or team management. We will be holding information and optional training sessions for new and current users to learn how to make Miro work for them. Look for more information about these sessions over the summer.

Yes! With the support of the Faculty Center for Innovation, Collaboration, and Support, we will offer multiple workshops and training sessions. If you have been an active Mural user, you should find Miro accessible and easy to use. If this is your first experience with digital whiteboards, we will provide the resources for you to integrate this amazing technology confidently into your teaching and research.

The Miro support team is available to answer any questions and provide the assistance you need to troubleshoot issues related to login, content migration, and even adding users or third-party plugins to your account. You can submit a support request to Miro online.

The transition from Mural to Miro will occur over the coming months, and a comprehensive training and education program will support faculty members throughout the process. We will schedule a series of training sessions, workshops, and support resources to ensure a smooth transition and to provide you with the necessary skills and knowledge to leverage Miro effectively in your work.

We encourage faculty and students to participate in these sessions to familiarize themselves with Miro and learn how to integrate it into their teaching, research, and collaborative activities.

It is important to note that The New School will no longer provide access to Mural after October 31st, 2024. For this reason, we urge users to learn about Miro, begin to experience its exciting features and plan to move any old or archived Mural content as soon as possible.

Online Learning will manage most whiteboard migration from Mural into Miro and training on Miro. IT will provide support for log-in and SSO-related issues and support for migration questions and issues will go to Miro.

As with Mural, New School Miro users can share and add members to their boards and include links, some content, and access to Miro in Canvas. The disruption to students should be minimal. Learn more about adding members to your boards.
