  • The Julien J. Studley Graduate Programs in International Affairs challenge students to think critically and deeply about urgent global challenges, such as social and economic rights, urban and community development, new media and technology, environmental justice, migration and refugees, international law, conflict, and peacebuilding. Our curricula combine historical and theoretical foundations, training in methods, and specialization in a thematic area of international affairs.

    Our Approach

Throughout your course of study as a graduate student, you are immersed in the conceptual frameworks that go beyond mainstream paradigms to analyse contemporary social issues. These frameworks reflect diverse views of the West and East, North and South, and plural theoretical traditions such as post-Westphalian IR, Human Rights approach to development, and critical security studies.

You benefit from multiple opportunities to participate in field-based learning and career exploration throughout your studies, and you complete your degree by undertaking a capstone project which may take the form of a research thesis or portfolio, or a practicum project.

Located at the heart of the global capital of international diplomacy, business, and social activism, The New School contributes to and fosters public debates about urgent social and political issues, often with distinguished invited speakers. The city offers opportunities for internships in diverse fields and organizations allowing students to explore career options.

  • Our 42-credit degree with a structured core curriculum and concentrations that let you specialize in cities and social justice, conflict and security, development, governance and rights, or media and culture.
  • Highly flexible 30-credit degree for experienced professionals offering unique combinations of thematic knowledge and practical tools through our innovative modular format.

  • Starting in fall 2023, students in the MA International Affairs program will have the option to complete the first 18 credits of the curriculum fully online and complete the remaining 24 credits on campus at The New School's New York City campus.

  • International Affairs students have the option to complete a graduate minor in a related field such as migration studies, global urban futures, or impact entrepreneurship, or explore other subjects and emerging interdisciplinary fields, such as capitalism studies, design studies, and digital storytelling.  These minors offer a structured course of study on a particular topic that combine courses from across the university's diverse colleges, exposing you to new ideas and alternative modes of research and practice, and broaden your skills and career options.
