• The Woolmark Company x Maison Dormeuil: Reinventing Gender in Fashion

  • In collaboration with The Woolmark Company and fabric manufacturer Maison Dormeuil, BFA Fashion Design students at Parsons Paris were recently challenged to imaginatively employ classic striped menswear wool twill in innovative design for both genders.

    Students at the beginning of their third year were asked to investigate the social hierarchies associated with classic menswear fabrics, which call to mind long-held European traditions of tailoring and bespoke clothing. In their research, students identified the striped pattern as a quintessential embodiment of male classicism and sought creative ways to free the material — through new fashion typologies — from its link with constricting male privilege and even Western worldviews.

    Working with Dormeuil’s exceptional striped black wool suiting, they fashioned innovative and expressive garments based on new notions of what an elegant man is. Their new image and creative techniques subverted the dominant classic suit, leading them to a heightened awareness of the dialectic relationship between masculinity and femininity in contemporary society. The garments themselves transcended the conservatism often associated with striped suiting material and instead highlighted the luxury quality and exquisite drape of the fabric.
