    Hilary Semel

    Profile

    Hilary Semel is a part-time faculty member in the Environmental Policy and Sustainability Management Environmental Studies, program, and a faculty research affiliate at the Tishman Environment and Design Center at The New School.  Hilary has been an environmental law and policy professional in the New York City region for the past 18 years. She is currently the Director of the Mayor’s Office of Environmental Coordination, which is part of New York City’s Climate Policy and Programs and oversees environmental review and green building compliance for New York City’s major infrastructure, capital, planning, and legislative projects and initiatives.  Before working in government, Hilary led the Eastern Environmental Law Center (EELC), the sole public interest environmental law firm in New Jersey, for 5 years.  At EELC, she worked with environmental and community groups on issues such as reduction of diesel and GHG emissions from goods movement activities at the Ports of New York and New Jersey, and resilient and sustainable energy infrastructure development in Newark, Hoboken, and the New Jersey Pinelands. As a private attorney in New York, Hilary focused on brownfield remediation and redevelopment, water and air quality compliance, and environmental review and due diligence. She worked on many significant public and private projects such as the Hudson River Park, the Whitney Museum, and Lincoln Center. She served on the Board of Directors for Sustainable South Bronx and the Lower East Side Ecology Center,  and pro bono counsel to Urban Green Council. Hilary has J.D. and Master's degree in Marine Affairs and Policy from University of Miami, and went to Barnard for college. Hilary lives with her family in the Lower East Side and enjoys tennis, salsa, and beaches everywhere.
