Environmental Policy and Sustainability Management (MS)
Gabrielle Houston (she/her) completed her MS in Environmental Policy and Sustainability Management in 2021 after completing her BA in Cultural Anthropology at Queens College in 2018.
While in the Environmental Policy and Sustainability Management program, Gabrielle partnered with the Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives (GAIA) as an independent contractor for her master's capstone project, Tracking Long Island Waste Flows. She worked with a local community organization in her hometown, Brookhaven Landfill Action and Remediation Group, to uncover Long Island’s racist waste management plans and to promote a zero waste policy. Afterward Gabrielle continued working with GAIA, developing tool kits for grassroots and environmental justice groups engaged in anti-incineration and zero waste campaigns.
Gabrielle served as a waste and energy justice consultant in 2021 and a zero waste and circular economy project manager in 2022 at the National Caucus of Environmental Legislators (NCEL), a nonpartisan network of legislative champions aiming to protect, preserve, and improve the environment. In her work as a project manager with NCEL, she develops comprehensive policy strategies to address the plastic pollution crisis, such as reducing and eliminating materials at the source, strengthening material recovery processes for greater recyclability, eliminating the use of hazardous substances in materials, and requiring producers to advance the zero waste and circular economy movement.
