• Funding and Scholarships
  • How to fund a study abroad experience is a common question students have and we’re here to help you plan. It’s important that students understand what financial aid is available for their study abroad programs. Additionally, there are a wide array of university and external funding sources, from small scholarships to prestigious grants and fellowships, available to New School students.

We encourage students to review aid conditions and study abroad budgets with their study abroad advisor and to attend a study abroad info session to prepare for study abroad costs.

Please note: All students must maintain comprehensive health insurance coverage while studying abroad and should include this cost when budgeting for their study abroad program.

Financial Aid & Study Abroad Programs

Students are strongly encouraged to meet with a financial aid counselor before studying abroad to gain an understanding of the financial aid conditions for their study abroad program type. Financial aid awards align with The New School academic calendar, so eligibility for financial aid may change between semesters and summer and winter sessions.

  • Scholarship Resources

There are many scholarship resources available at The New School to help students planning to study abroad, such as:

All students are also encouraged to consult with their academic departments to research other funding opportunities that may be available. Students who hold U.S. citizenship are encouraged to consider applying for the U.S. government study abroad scholarships that are mentioned below, where eligible. Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship
The U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship enables students with limited financial means — including students from diverse backgrounds and students going to non-traditional study abroad destinations — to study or intern abroad, thereby gaining skills critical to our national security and economic competitiveness. The Gilman Scholarship Program is open to U.S. citizen undergraduate students who are receiving federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study and intern abroad programs worldwide. Established under the International Academic Opportunity Act of 2000, Gilman Scholarships provide up to $5,000 for American students to pursue overseas study for college credit. Please see the Gilman Scholarship Flyer for more details.

    Boren Awards
An initiative of the National Security Education Program, the Boren Awards, including the Boren Fellowships (for U.S. graduate students) and Boren Scholarships (for U.S. undergraduate students), provide unique funding opportunities to study less commonly taught languages in world regions critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, central and eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. Please see the Boren Fellowship Flyer and the Boren Scholarship Flyer for more details. Boren Award winners commit to work in the U.S. government for at least one year following graduation.
