English is a vital language for global communications. The demand for trained professionals in the field of TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) is greater than ever. This master’s program offers training in teaching and in curriculum development with a focus on experiential learning and reflective practice. Graduates develop a keen understanding of social justice and the needs of adult English language learners.

The program is rooted in The New School’s commitment to progressive social change — our approach to language instruction embeds diversity, equity, and inclusion as core values of teaching and curriculum design.

  • MA TESOL curriculum allows you to choose a concentration in either Teaching or Curriculum Development. Students learn to create programs and teach English in a way that bridges cultural and linguistic divides and respects local values. If you are interested in studying on-site at The New School's New York City campus, you can expedite your studies by taking up to four courses in our summer intensive program

  • Our MA TESOL program grapples with issues of major political, social, and cultural concern. Our Outreach Program enables you, while you are enrolled as a student, to teach and design curricula for communities in need, including food service workers in New York City, parents in multilingual families, and survivors of violence. Other recent projects include teaching English to immigrant parents as part of the GO Project and the ASPIRA organization, and to women who are victims of violence at Sanctuary for Families.
  • Our MA TESOL faculty experts demonstrate exceptional teaching skills and the energy and dedication needed to ensure your success. Our international faculty includes some of the most respected authors and ESOL professionals in the field, including Steve Cornwell, Jeremy Harmer, Carol Lethaby, Emily Reynolds, and ELTon award winner Scott Thornbury.
