    Daniel Michalik

    Profile

    Daniel is the founder of DMFD, a firm creating furniture and objects from underutilized, environmentally responsible materials and manufacturing methods. Recent explorations have included cork from sustainably managed forests and lumber from structures around New York City. He has worked with clients such as Mario Batali, L’Oreal, Dean & Deluca, Swarovski, JeanGeorge Vongerichten, AREAWARE and the Smithsonian, where his work is in the permanent collection. Daniel has exhibited internationally, including at the Milan Furniture Fair, The Smithsonian’s Renwick Gallery of American Craft and the VIA in Paris. His work has appeared in such publications as The New York Times, New York Magazine, Dwell, Taschen Books, I.D., Wallpaper*, Interior Design and American Craft, as well as the Sundance Channel and HGTV. Daniel recently traveled to Portugal on the invitation of The Portuguese Cork Council to research the agriculture and industry of cork for a series of articles and photo galleries published in the design journal Core 77. He has also written on design for American Craft and Stylus. He has been teaching product design and interior design at Parsons, and has led numerous workshops at design and craft schools worldwide. He received his MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in the Department of Furniture Design and a BA in philosophy from Loyola University of Chicago.
