  • The School of Languages at The New School has two main missions: training students to teach English to speakers of other languages (ESOL), and providing foreign language instruction, including English as a second language (ESL), for all colleges of The New School.

    English Language Teaching

    For more than 25 years, The New School has been educating highly qualified professional teachers of English for speakers of other languages (ESOL) around the world. Our highly regarded TESOL master's degree program and certificate program give English language teachers the means to design and execute a curriculum.

    Master's in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages is The New School's unique MA program has two concentrations, Teaching and Curriculum Development. The faculty includes some of the world's leading TESOL experts.

    Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages is a continuing education certificate for prospective or working teachers and community workers who are not ready for the MA TESOL program or whose goals don't require a master's degree. 

    English Language Learning

    The New School offers a variety of courses and certificate programs that provide high-quality training in English as a second language (ESL).

    ESL + University Preparation certificate is a flexible English language training program that is customized to each individual student's undergraduate or graduate academic focus.

    ESL + Design certificate is a specialized program for international students interested in attending an art and design college in the U.S.

    ESL + Music certificate is a specialized program for music students admitted to a degree program at Mannes School of Music.

    ESL + Food certificate is a specialized program for students who want to attend culinary school at the International Culinary Center, obtain a degree in Food Studies at The New School, or choose another career path within the food industry.

    Open-enrollment ESL courses are individual courses for people with some prior knowledge of English. Courses are open to New School students who need to improve their English and to the general public.

    University Undergraduate Curriculum

    The department offers courses from beginning to advanced levels in a dozen languages for matriculated undergraduates of all colleges at The New School. Offerings include academic and cultural courses supporting minors in Chinese, French, Japanese, and Hispanic Studies for undergraduates whose programs allow a minor.

    Open-Enrollment Courses

    Open-enrollment continuing education courses in many languages at various levels are offered to the general public and university students on a noncredit or general credit basis through The New School's Open Campus. This includes On the Go weekend immersion classes, for people who wish to learn some basics or brush up on a language in a short time, and reading courses for graduate students.
