Public Engagement

  • The Documentary Media Studies program provides an opportunity to study documentary filmmaking—production and theory—in a small, tightly focused program in New York City, the world's documentary capital. This is a full-time, daytime, intensive one-year curriculum.

Certificate holders are qualified to enter documentary media professions as editors, field producers, cinematographers, directors, researchers, and through industry positions in media distribution, museum programming, festival organization, and broadcast productions. They can also continue graduate school in pursuit of an MA, MS and/or PhD in Media, Anthropology, Film Studies, or related field. Students who complete the Certificate in Documentary Media Studies and apply and are admitted to the MA in Media Studies or MS in Media Management at The New School may transfer all certificate credits earned with a grade of B or above.

    Truth Be Told Documentary Festival

The Doc Studies program culminates in a three-day student documentary festival, Truth Be Told, at the end of each school year. At the festival, certificate students' films are publicly screened and discussed by the filmmakers and faculty. The films are the products of students' year-long study of documentary production, history, and theory.

To view past festival programs, including trailers of the documentary shorts, visit the Truth Be Told festival website.

    Entrance Requirements

The New School welcomes applications from aspiring documentarians of diverse backgrounds and experiences. You do not need a film degree to apply, but you must have a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university and submit a portfolio, including a video self-portrait, a creative sample, and a treatment for a documentary project. Learn more in the application instructions.
