David Loeb is a graduate of Mannes where he studied composition with Peter Stearns and theory and analysis with Carl Schachter and William Mitchell. He has taught at Mannes continuously since 1964, and also taught at the Curtis Institute of Music from 1973 until 2000.
He has published articles on highly diverse subjects, including analysis of East Asian music, studies in Bach and early 20th century music.
About 200 of his compositions have been recorded. including many works for East Asian instruments (mostly Japanese) and for early Western instruments (mostlysviols).
His published works include about a dozen for solo piccolo, a quartet for four bass flutes, and works for viols, from solo to ensembles of twelve players, and a suite for violin and small orchestra. He has given lectures and lecture-recitals in the US and in Japan.
He spends most of his vacations in Japan, where in addition to musical activities he and his wife work on preserving their traditional Kyoto 'machiya' residence, built in the 1830s.
