Lang’s General Degree Requirements
In addition to the requirements outlined here, Lang has specific requirements, including a minimum number of credits in liberal arts courses as well as college residency requirements. All students should read Lang’s General Degree Requirements and consult with both their Student Success advisor and their Departmental Faculty Advisor each semester to ensure that they are on track to graduate.

Requirements for the BA in Screen Studies
As of fall 2020, students declaring the major in Screen Studies must take 12 courses, outlined as follows. The minimum grade for Introductory courses is B. Receiving a grade lower than a B requires retaking the Introductory course if you want to continue
with the major. A grade of D in a non-core class cannot be counted toward the major (although it can still count for overall credits). A minimum GPA of 3.0 is expected of all students intending to declare in Screen Studies (slightly lower GPAs can
be accepted if the student receives an A in the Introductory course connected to their area, or both Introductory courses if the student is mixing and matching between areas).
Declare your major by following the process outlined in Declaring Your Major. Students who have
declared the major in Screen Studies before fall 2020 but wish to follow the fall 2020 curriculum can consult their Student Success advisor about submitting a Change of Catalog Year request.
Only specific courses satisfy the major requirements, including electives. Courses should be chosen carefully, in consultation with the your Student Success advisor and the departmental faculty advisor who can offer detailed information about the program
and suggest course sequences. Track your progress using the program worksheet (below). See the university course catalog for fall 2024 Screen Studies courses that fulfill these requirements.
Introductory courses (6–8 credits):
Other required courses* (27–36 credits):
- 9 LCST electives totaling 27–36 credits, chosen in consultation with the departmental faculty advisor. At least one must be 4000 level or higher, at least one must be in Media Studies, and one must be in Cultural Studies.
*Students must complete
two Introductory courses (Intro to Screen Studies and one additional Intro course) before enrolling in any 3000- or 4000-level course.
Senior Capstone (3–4 credits):
Choose one of the following options in consultation with your departmental faculty advisor (3-4 credits):
- LCST 4900 Senior Seminar. Senior Seminars are offered in the spring term. They are small classes for which students register and are intended for students who are working intensively to make a short film. Students are accepted to Senior Seminar on an application basis. Note: The deadline to submit applications for spring 2024 has been extended to October 27, 2023. Applications
should be sent to the professor teaching the preferred section of Senior Seminar.
- LCST 4990 Senior Work (permission required). Seniors have the option of counting one independent study course toward the senior project (with a maximum of 4 credits). In the preceding semester, students must submit the following:
- A two-page proposal outlining the project (whether a moving image project, a research project, or a combination of the two)
- Written approval from the full-time faculty Screen Studies or Culture and Media faculty member who will be guiding the independent study. Part-time faculty members are not eligible to direct independent studies.
The independent study application is due August 1 for the fall term and December 1 for the spring term. It should be submitted by email to the departmental faculty advisor for Screen Studies. Once the application is approved by the departmental
faculty advisor and faculty member, the Student Success office will open up registration for the student.
- A second 4000-level LCST course (or graduate course, with approval). Students may take an additional 4000-level course in Culture and Media. With the permission of the Screen Studies departmental faculty advisor and the course instructor,
students may alternatively apply a 4000-level course in a different department or New School college or a course at the 5000 level or higher at a different New School college.
