Degree Requirements

  • Students can study Psychology as a major (BA, Psychology), a minor, or part of a self-designed major (BA or BS, Liberal Arts).

    Psychology Degree Requirements

    Only specific courses satisfy the major requirements, including electives. Courses should be chosen carefully, in consultation with the departmental faculty advisor and your Student Success advisor.     Introductory course:

    • ULEC 2160 Introduction to Psychology

    Other required courses:

    • 1 course in statistics
    • LPSY 3601 Methods of Inquiry
    • 4 Fundamentals courses (2000 level)
    • 3 Psychology electives (3000 level)
    • 2 Psychology seminars (3500 level and above or graduate level)

    Senior Capstone:

    • Senior Work Project or graduate-level course in psychology

    Total credits:  47-52

  • Detailed Degree Requirements

    In addition to the requirements outlined below, Lang has general requirements, including a minimum number of credits in liberal arts courses and college residency requirements. All students should read the general Degree Requirements and consult with their Student Success advisor and departmental faculty advisor each semester to ensure that they are on track to graduate.

    Students must earn a grade of C or higher in all courses to meet the requirements for the major. Only specific courses satisfy the major requirements, including electives. Courses should be chosen carefully, in consultation with the departmental faculty advisor.

    The major in Psychology requires completion of 13 courses, distributed as follows. Track your progress using the program worksheets (see below). Psychology courses are not offered in the summer.     Required Courses

    Introductory Course:

    • ULEC 2160 Introduction to Psychology (fall only; recommended for first year; 4 credits)

    Other Required Courses:

    • Choose one statistics course (4 credits):
      - LMTH 2030 Statistics with SPSS (strongly recommended for second year)
      - or Statistics for Social Sciences (fall only)
    • Four LPSY "Fundamentals of..." (core) psychology courses, 2000 level (recommended for first and second years; 6 credits)
    • LPSY 3601 Methods of Inquiry (fall only; recommended for third year; 4 credits)
    • Three approved psychology electives, 3000-3499 or graduate level (fulfills integrative requirement; recommended for third and fourth years; 12 credits)
    • Two psychology (LPSY) seminars, 3500 level and above, or a graduate-level GPSY course (recommended for third and fourth years; 6-8 credits)

    Senior Capstone

    • Choose one senior capstone (first semester of senior year; 1-4 credits). This must be approved by the student’s departmental faculty advisor and the director of Undergraduate Studies in Psychology. Choose from the following two options:
          - LPSY 4001 Senior Work Project*
          - Graduate-level (GPSY) course in psychology (1-4 credits)

    Note: The Senior Project requires students to collaborate with a faculty member in the Department of Psychology. It is the responsibility of the student to establish contact with a faculty member to discuss the possibility of support for the Senior Project. Contact should be made with a faculty member at least one semester before the commencement of the Senior Work.
