  • This page outlines requirements for the degree in History (BA, History). Students can also study this subject as a minor or as part of a self-designed major (BA or BS, Liberal Arts).

Students must receive grades of C or better in all courses taken to fulfill major requirements. Only specific courses satisfy the major requirements, including electives. Courses should be chosen carefully, in consultation with the chair of the program. Track your progress using the requirements worksheet (see below) for the year in which you declared your major in History.

Requirements for the History Major (BA History)

The major in History requires completion of thirteen (13) courses, distributed as shown below.

    • Two Foundation courses, chosen from
      • LHIS 2016 Doing History
      • LHIS 3001 Uses of the Past
      • ULEC 2400 America Is Hard to Find
    • Two Introductory History courses (2000 level), chosen in consultation with an advisor in the History program
    • Five upper-level courses in History (3000 level or higher; at least one must be 4000 level. Note: LHIS 4900, the prerequisite for Senior Capstone, fulfills the 4000-level requirement.)
    • Three thematically related courses outside of the major, chosen in consultation with the chair or an advisor in the History program
    • Senior Capstone:
LHIS 4950 Independent Senior Project (prerequisite: LHIS 4900)

More information on the Senior Capstone can be found on the Advising page.

    Total credits: 44-52
