• DEACTIVATED - Tim Jones: Changing Careers to Find Success

  • Tim Jones was working in hotel management when he decided to return to college and finish his degree through The New School's Bachelor's Program for Adults and Transfer Students. The opportunity to design his own course of study was a deciding factor. Another was the recommendation of one of his mentors, who had studied in the Riggio Honors Program: Writing and Democracy, a sequence of writing workshops and literary seminars for undergraduates.

“Riggio is a very special program,” says Jones. “We have unparalleled access to a staff of professional writers. Belonging to this community of writers is the best part of being in the program.”

The openness of the curriculum in the Bachelor's Program for Adults and Transfer Students enabled Jones to develop his creative and intellectual abilities.

“The program's emphasis on art and social justice creates an environment that has allowed me to be myself both in the classroom and within the Riggio community," he says. "And at The New School, you are surrounded by people genuinely interested in your success.”

Jones works on his own writing and is editor-in-chief of 12th Street, the literary journal of the Riggio Honors Program, a position involving collaboration with peers. He says, "at some point, you cross swords with everyone, including friends. Knowing how to manage disagreements and remain professional and tactful takes respect and maturity. Those moments of disagreement are beautiful; editing offers opportunities to learn about another person's perspective.”

Jones' experience working at the journal has paid off already: Clint White, one of Jones' professors, hired him last year for a position at his marketing and advertising firm, WiT Media.
